Gord MaGill, dropped by my office on his way back from Ottawa where he sat in the courtroom on April 3, 2025, to hear Justice Perkin-McVey deliver her verdict on Tamara Lich and Chris Barber.
Justice Perkins-McVey reached the following conclusions regarding the charges against Lich and Barber:
- Mischief (Count 6): Both Lich and Barber were found guilty of mischief. The judge concluded that their actions, as leaders and organizers of the Freedom Convoy, contributed to the obstruction and interference with the lawful use and enjoyment of property in downtown Ottawa.
- Counseling to Commit Mischief (Count 1): The Crown requested a stay of this charge, which the judge granted.
- Intimidation (Count 5): Both Lich and Barber were found not guilty of intimidation. The judge concluded that the Crown had not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused intended to intimidate others through their actions.
- Counseling to Commit Intimidation (Count 2): Both Lich and Barber were found not guilty of this charge.
- Obstructing Police (Count 4): Both Lich and Barber were found not guilty of obstructing police. The judge noted that the accused were arrested before the police removal action began and did not personally obstruct the police.
- Counseling to Commit the Offence of Obstruct Justice (Count 3): Both Lich and Barber were found not guilty of this charge.
- Disobey Court Order (Count 7): Barber was found guilty of this charge. The judge concluded that Barber’s TikTok video encouraging his followers to “grab that horn switch and don’t let go” was a deliberate encouragement to disobey the court order prohibiting the use of air horns.
Gord shares with Barry his thoughts of the situation that Ms. Lich and Mr. Barber face. The sentence is expected sometime next month. This is a case that keeps on – as the Crown is advocating for imprisonment. They face up to ten years in jail.
